Quiet Cookin' At The "Cademy" |

Without fanfare or blue carpets, the debut of the Dayton Blues Society’s "Blues In the Schools" program staged at the Dayton View Academy on the 11th of February, was no less than a smokin' event.
Whoever suggested learning can't be fun would be well served to experience DBS's take on how to stir up a classroom on a productive note. Although the walls of this venue were anything but institution green, for 60 minutes on that overcast morning they became 40 plus 5th, 6th, and 7th (grades) shades of blue. The kids from this age bracket are a tough audience. One of the secrets to the success of this kind of undertaking is the careful selection of the music that an expeditious 12 year old mind would discern. |

Featuring Bob Margolin & Hubert Sumlin Gilly's January 16th 2010
Be Careful what you wish for...
So why does it take the resident "blues archivist" a week to report on a five act performance at Dayton's nationally known showcase club? Any excuses?
No, the fingers weren't frozen. No one to appease politically. All the encouragement in place. No writer's block, always help at hand with the mechanics of the computer. Then why the hesitation?

Sunday, October 11th, a strange sound could be heard in and around local hot spot, Sloopy’s down in the Oregon District. BLUES!!! The Dayton Blues Society’s “Blues Sunday” Blues Jam took place with an older than normal crowd coming in to enjoy the host band, Malkum Gibson & the Mighty Juke, and a group of jam bands that really entertained blues lovers old and young. Special treat this month was the addition of Myron’s BBQ … and everyone had BBQ sauce on their chin!!! Thanks, Myron!

For those of you like us … newbie’s at the International Blues Challenge, let me give you the details on our little re-con mission to Memphis last week. Tammy and I left Wednesday evening after work and decided to break up the 9 hour trip with a stop in Louisville, Kentucky, stayed down town, and ended up pretty much closing up Stevie Ray’s Blues Bar. First time either of us had been there, noticed pictures on the walls of Eric Jerardi Band and the Soulcasters, and left there sometime after 1am with smiles on our faces.

We made it into Memphis around 1 o’clock Thursday and checked into the Doubletree Hotel on Union Avenue (“saw the ghost of Elvis on Union Avenue”), which was the headquarters for the IBC. The lobby was crowded with people and booths, some carrying instruments and others simply networking or getting information. A short 2 block walk to Beale Street revealed a horde of brothers and sisters of the blues, drenched in the atmosphere and truly walking with their “feet 10 feet off of Beale”.

Jammin’ Was Great on Route 68! |

What started out as a packed house of football watchers and diners turned into a packed house of blues lovers last night at Nick’s in Xenia! Hosted by the Average Joes, featuring Joe Hill, Joe Prescott, and Mike Hausfeld, the room was filled not only with blues fans but some of the area’s best blues musicians! Great food, great blues, and plenty to drink! Thanks to the fine folks at Nick’s for making our first trip to Xenia such a fantastic time. Also, special thanks to Linda Wright for taking the photos.
